‘Once Upon A Time’s’ Ginnifer Goodwin & Josh Dallas On Mary Margaret’s Parental Worries

October 25

“Once Upon a Time’s” Mary Margaret and David/Charming are going on their own date night this Sunday night on ABC.

Last week, the fairytale couple (for the first time) experienced what it was like to watch their daughter, Emma, go out on a date, while they sat at home worrying. Date night for the couple themselves though, may present a different set of worries, including being away from baby Neal for the first time.

Ginnifer Goodwin explained what’s behind her character’s parental worries this season on “Once.”

“I think it’s because she put Emma in a wardrobe… and then she physically had — Neal was swept up from her arms by the Wicked Witch last season, so I think there’s like a physical need to hold tight and I also think that given what happened to Emma, I think that she thought that having a baby was gonna sort of make up for what happened before and that there would be like an [alleviating] of the guilt, but instead, she doesn’t really feel suddenly deserving somehow… of Neal at all,” Ginnifer said on the set last week.

“She believes that she needs to be like this ridiculously, unrealistically perfect multi-tasking mayor mother and that if she can’t do everything, it’s almost like she shouldn’t be allowed to do anything and so she’s also scared to ask for help,” the actress continued.

Josh Dallas, who plays Charming, said his character understands where Mary Margaret is coming from.

“He gets it, he gets why she’s doing it, you know? We haven’t had the best luck bringing up babies… We put them in wardrobes and they get taken away from us and they get swept up by wicked witches and things like that, so he understands why she’s being so protective in not letting go of baby Neal,” Josh explained.

“But, at the same time… he wants that chance to be able to be the father that he didn’t get to be with Emma, but he’s gonna be there and he’s gonna be supportive and he’s going to let her know that he’s there and… let her know that he wants to help and be there, but he also understand that she needs her time to be able to process it and go through what she needs to go through,” Josh added.

“Once Upon a Time” continues Sunday at 8/7c on ABC.

There’s only one thing that can make dreams come true… A little magic. But making a deal with the dark one always has a price.
